【Abstract】 The problem of school selection is now a focus of domestic and abroad educational field.Some scholars believe that school selection violates the educational equity, and the critics ofdomestic media and parents on school selection are mostly attribute to the abuse of power andmoney. The root of school selection is the contradictions of strong demand and shortage ofsupply of good educational resources. For many years, through various efforts, Beijing strives tomake balanced allocation of educational resources, thereby gradually reducing the proportion ofstudents by school selection. From2000when school selection prevailed to2014when Beijingintroduce the new policy of admission of the junior and senior high school students, manystudents spend their middle school time by school selection, however, little study was done onthe development of students by school selection, this paper seeks to explore the impact of schoolselection from the perspective of student development.Five dimensions of student development were developed based on the basic and academicdevelopment goals: Students’ attitudes to school, student relationships in the school,self-evaluation of learning attitude, learning stress, and performance evaluation. Questionnairesand interviews were used to collect research data. Through statistical analysis which helps toclarify the general situation of school selection, the aim of this study is to reveal the impact ofschool selection on the development of middle school students and to discuss the difference ofschool selection in Beijing middle and high school.The results show that school choice will have a positive impact on school selection students,and school selection will increase the learning pressure on students. In addition, students ofschool selection can be equally treated by teachers and other students. The attitude to school ofstudents of school selection and non-selection is significantly different, students of schoolselection prefer schools; there is significant difference of interpersonal relationship of students ofschool selection and non-selection, students of school selection have more harmoniousrelationship; there is no significant difference of the relationship to teachers of two groups ofstudents, both groups can be treated equally by teachers; the attitude to learning of students ofschool selection and non-selection is significantly different, students of school selection preferlearning; there is no significant difference of learning stress of two groups, the proportion of experiencing high learning stress in both groups are large; the scores before admission has nosignificant difference of two groups, but after admission, the scores of students of schoolselection decrease significantly. There is a big difference of school selection between highschool and middle school.
